Wine & Food

The agreeable climate and rich soils of Canterbury are ideal for growing grapes, olives, nuts, vegetables and other produce. Combined with New Zealand lamb, beef, venison and catches from the sea, delectable treats await you in the many cafes and restaurants located throughout the Alpine Pacific Triangle Touring Route.

Exciting and award-winning wines are produced from the burgeoning Waipara Valley and Kaikoura wineries. The free-draining soils, hot summers and protection from cool winds produce outstanding vintages with unique and individual characteristics. Varieties for which the area is developing an excellent reputation are Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, Pinot noir and Chardonnay.

Many wineries and a local boutique brewery are open for tastings and cellar door sales, while some offer lunches and dinners in their boutique restaurants.

Kaikoura, being an important fishing port, is a mecca for seafood lovers with ample fresh delicacies for all, including grouper, cod, mussels, paua (abalone) and crayfish (lobster).
