Update from Transwaste Canterbury 7/10/08. The Mt Cass Walkway is now open but care will be needed on steeper sections of this walkway. For all enquiries please phone 0800 644 433.
Directions - starts from the car parking area 3.3km from State Highway 1
Mt Cass Walkway was developed cooperatively by the Waipara Valley Promotions Association and Transwaste Canterbury Limited, with local people providing many hours of volunteer labour and donated materials. It was first opened to the public on 10 April 2006.
Open to the public for most of the year, the walkway will be closed annually at lambing time, usually during August and September.
Most of the walkway is on a formed track. Reasonable fitness levels are required, especially for the top most section of the track. Sturdy footwear is recommended. The Walkway is a moderately steep 2-3 hour walk to the lookout at the top of Mt Cass.
Because the walkway is on a working farm, farm rules apply to anyone who uses Mt Cass Walkway. These include -
* Keep to the track at all times
* Watch out for farm vehicles
* Use the stiles provided when crossing fences
* Leave marker posts and markers alone
* Do NOT drink water from the troughs
* Do NOT open farm gates
* No dogs!
* No mountain bikes
* No fires
* No firearms
